Grollera specimen from Tipografies

A 4-family grotesque by Jordi Embodas that pairs early 19th-century outer letterform character with squarish modern counters across Wide, Narrow, Condensed and Compressed cuts.

About

Designed by Jordi Embodas and released in 2022, Grollera consciously revives the raw energy of pre-Helvetica grotesques, whose personality was progressively smoothed away by mid-century modernism. Each of the four width families spans five uprights and five obliques, from Thin to Black, giving a total of 40 styles across the full range. The combination of historically derived outer shapes with angular inner forms produces a tension that makes it well suited to editorial and branding contexts where legibility and character need to coexist.

Classification

Grollera draws explicitly on 19th-century grotesque outer forms while pairing them with modern, squarish inner counters, placing it firmly in the grotesque sans tradition with a contemporary structural twist.
