Designed by Ariel Martín Pérez using a trackpad in Processing before letter shapes were reconstructed from oval modules in Glyphs, the method is deliberately iterative and resists conventional type-drawing workflows. Its contrast direction runs counter to Western calligraphic tradition, and the result sits between the handwritten and the digital in a way the designer describes as cyborg. Available under the SIL Open Font License as a free download from Tunera.
Classification
Azabache defies conventional serif or sans categorisation; its oval modular construction, reversed contrast direction and heavy texture place it firmly in experimental display territory, distinct from traditional calligraphic or digital type.
