Ludwig Outline
TYPE BY · Fred Smeijers · 2019

An outline display variant of Fred Smeijers' Ludwig grotesque, drawn from early 19th-century German sanserif models and released as a single Normal style in 2019.
About
Derived from the Ludwig text family, this outline cut strips the grotesque back to its contour, making it suited to packaging, posters and headline work where open letterforms can breathe. Ludwig itself draws on the earliest German grotesques rather than later rationalist revivals, giving it a slight irregularity that distinguishes it from smoother neo-grotesque alternatives. The outline version was designed alongside Ludwig Shaded between 2007 and 2009 but held back until a fresh release in 2019.
Classification
