Ludwig Shaded specimen from TYPE BY

A shaded display cut of Fred Smeijers' Ludwig grotesque, originally drawn in 2007-2009 and released commercially in 2019.

About

Ludwig Shaded is one of two decorative variants — alongside Ludwig Outline — drawn from Smeijers' Ludwig family, a grotesque rooted in early German sanserifs of the mid-19th century. The single Normal weight carries the same considered letterforms as the text family, with their characteristic period clumsiness, now amplified for headline and poster work through the shaded treatment. It shares proportions with TYPE BY's Arnhem, making it a natural companion for mixed-family settings.

Classification

A decorative shaded variant of Ludwig, itself a grotesque sans rooted in early 19th-century German sanserif tradition. The shaded treatment places it firmly in the display category despite the base family's text capabilities.
