BD AsciiMax specimen from Type Different

A single-weight display font that recreates the ASCII art lettering style of late-1970s and early-1980s bulletin board systems.

About

Each letterform is built from text characters arranged to simulate the kind of logotypes and titles that BBS and Usenet users assembled within the constraints of early computer hardware. Released in 1999, the face covers Basic Latin, Latin-1 Supplement and a handful of additional glyphs including Greek and currency symbols. Its appeal is primarily archival and nostalgic, suited to retro computing aesthetics and period-appropriate branding.

Classification

A display typeface that simulates ASCII art typography, where letterforms are constructed from text characters to mimic the visual output of BBS and Usenet systems. This places it firmly in the display category as a novelty or period-style face rather than a functional text or mono font.
