Easy Grotesk
TypeMates · Alexander Rütten, Olivia Wood · 2023

A neo-grotesque with top-heavy letterforms and playful character details, designed for a tech startup and extended into a full variable family by Alexander Rütten and Olivia Wood.
About
Seven weights with matching italics and a variable font implementation, built around inverted optical proportions where letters sit heavier at the top than the base. The signature double-storey a, an upturned s and a suite of OpenType alternates give it a distinct personality without abandoning the functional texture of a workhorse grotesque. Originally commissioned for a tech startup, it covers broad Latin and suits identity, publishing and complex information design where warmth matters as much as utility.
Classification
Self-described as following a standard neo-grotesque model, but with top-heavy, inverted proportions and expressive character details that push it into a playful, expressive register.
