Gregory Grotesk specimen from TypeMates

A geometric grotesque by Jakob Runge and Antonia Cornelius that pairs top-heavy letter shapes and rounded inner corners with the functional range of a 24-style variable font covering three widths and eight weights.

About

Released in 2025 by TypeMates, Gregory Grotesk draws on 19th-century grotesque printing, with strokes that taper at joints to simulate ink behaviour and rounded angular junctions that lend a handmade warmth without sacrificing legibility at small sizes. The family spans three widths from Compressed to standard and eight weights from Thin to Black, all unified in a single variable font with weight and width axes. Greek and Cyrillic were approved by native-speaking designers, extending coverage to over 270 languages including Vietnamese.

Classification

A geometric grotesque with 19th-century grotesque references, featuring distinctive top-heavy letterforms, rounded inner corners and tapering strokes at joints that recall wood type and early grotesque printing traditions.
