Sombra Variable
TypeMates · Paul Eslage · 2020

A geometric grotesque by Paul Eslage that introduces leafy, sharply swelling strokes and exaggerated incisions across seven weights and a variable axis spanning condensed to extended widths.
About
Paul Eslage's Sombra sits between conventional geometric grotesques and something more wilful, using swelling terminals and deep incisions to give each weight a distinct organic character. The family runs from Condensed Thin through Extended Black before culminating in an Ultra Black Poster style with overgrown terminals and hairline punctuation symbols. Over 700 glyphs per style cover more than 200 Latin languages, with arrows, circled numbers, stylistic alternates and ligatures included throughout.
Classification
Described as an organic grotesque, Sombra combines geometric construction with swelling strokes and exaggerated incisions, placing it firmly in the grotesque sans-serif tradition with an expressive, organic character.
