History

A 21-layer modular type system from Typotheque that lets designers stack discrete letterform components to construct historically-inflected chromatic display type.
About
History is built from 21 numbered layers, each encoding a different structural or decorative element drawn from type history, which can be combined freely to produce compound letterforms with depth, texture and chromatic complexity. Pre-set combinations are named after cities, from Amsterdam to Zaragoza, offering starting points that demonstrate the breadth of the system. It is one of the most architecturally rigorous layered typefaces in contemporary type design, with a combinatorial range that goes well beyond typical two-colour chromatic fonts.
Classification
History is a modular, layered type system composed of 21 discrete layers that can be combined to produce historically-referencing composite letterforms; it resists a single traditional classification and sits firmly in the display category as a chromatic or layered type system.
