Karloff Negative specimen from Typotheque

Part of a three-way type system by Typotheque that explores extreme stroke contrast by inverting conventional thick-thin relationships.

About

Karloff Negative is one arm of the Karloff system, which spans Positive, Negative and Neutral variants, each treating stroke contrast differently as a structural variable rather than a stylistic afterthought. The Negative cut reverses the expected axis of contrast, thickening strokes where a conventional serif would be thinnest, producing a tension that makes it particularly suited to display and editorial contexts. Three weights run from Regular to Bold, each with a matching italic, and named style bundles such as Amsterdam, Bengaluru and Copenhagen allow individual purchase of specific weight-style combinations.

Classification

Karloff Negative belongs to a three-part system exploring extreme contrast between thick and thin strokes; the Negative variant inverts the conventional stress, placing thick strokes where thin would traditionally appear, giving it a distinctive reverse-contrast character.
