About
Designed by Travis Kochel and first released in 2011, Chartwell uses OpenType technology to turn numeric strings into rendered charts while keeping the underlying data as editable text. Thirteen chart variants cover pies, bars, lines, radar plots, scatter graphs and more, with web and Figma support added alongside the Adobe ecosystem. Originally signed with FontFont in 2012, it returned to its creators at Vectro in 2023 and picked up awards from Fast Company, Communication Arts and Typographica along the way.
Classification
Chartwell is a functional novelty typeface that uses OpenType discretionary ligatures to render data entered as text into chart forms such as pies, bars and radar plots. It defies standard classification but sits closest to display given its specialised, non-running-text application.
