WHOA specimen from Vectro

An experimental variable display font with four axes — horizontal offset, vertical offset, rotation and zoom — that push letterforms into simulated three-dimensional space.

About

Driven by four variable axes, WHOA extrudes its letterforms into a kind of typographic hyperspace, producing effects that range from subtle depth to extreme dimensional distortion. Each named style — Bump, Rise, Slide, Zoom, Groove and others — represents a distinct expressive register, and each pairs with a filled 'Top' layer designed to sit over the extruded forms and restore legibility. Art direction by Travis Kochel and Lizy Gershenzon, with lead design and production by Kochel; the project has been developed incrementally since 2019.

Classification

A fully experimental display typeface driven by four variable font axes that extrude letterforms into simulated three-dimensional space, placing it firmly outside conventional classification and squarely in the display/experimental category.
