Category specimen from VJ Type

A geometric grotesque from VJ Type with eight weights and a handful of eccentric lowercase letterforms that stop it reading as purely utilitarian.

About

Designed by Jérémy Schneider with assistance from Liana Korios and released in 2023, Category runs from Regular to Black with matching italics across all four weights. The family is built on low-contrast geometric foundations but introduces deliberate singularities, particularly in the lowercase a, g, j and y, and angled details in certain capitals. It covers over forty Latin-script languages and ships in OTF, WOFF and WOFF2 formats, intended for use across long text, body copy, headlines and identity work.

Classification

Category originates from geometric shapes with low contrast, placing it squarely in the geometric grotesque tradition, though deliberate eccentric details in the lowercase a, g, j and y introduce a humanist warmth that keeps it from being purely geometric.
