VTC Garibaldi specimen from Vocal Type

An extra condensed grotesque sans rooted in the clandestine anti-fascist print culture of wartime Italy, designed by Vocal Type in collaboration with Michele Patanè.

About

Drawn from the mastheads, flyers and journals of the Italian Resistance, particularly the Brigate Garibaldi's publication Il Combattente (1943–1944), VTC Garibaldi Sans Extra Condensed reproduces the mechanical, sturdy character of wooden headline type used under conditions of secrecy and scarcity. The family is conceived as a broader typographic palette eventually comprising a sans, a serif and a monospace, each reflecting the eclectic range of type available to clandestine printers during the German occupation. The current release focuses on the condensed sans cut, with an extended variant in development.

Classification

An extra condensed grotesque sans with a mechanical, wooden-type character drawn from Italian anti-fascist WWII print ephemera; structured and utilitarian in nature.
