A three-style display family designed by Tré Seals to accompany his full book design for Spike Lee's monograph, drawing on jersey numerals, film posters and the iconic rings from Do The Right Thing.
About
Designed in parallel with a five-typeface custom commission for Spike Lee's book, VTC Spike distils the visual language of Lee's career into a single headline family. Square geometric counters run through the entire design, sourced from a typographic tone board of film poster lettering; the numerals reference jersey graphics from the Knicks, Michael Jordan and Jackie Robinson. The result is a typeface that reads as both a portrait of its subject and a considered piece of Afro-American cultural type design.
