displaydisplay sans
VTC Tank Man specimen from Vocal Type

A display typeface drawn from protest banners carried during the 1989 Tiananmen Square demonstrations, part of Vocal Type's ongoing series connecting type history to political movements.

About

The letterforms are sourced from two banners photographed from multiple angles during the peaceful 1989 Tiananmen Square protests in Beijing, one carrying the phrase 'Give me democracy or give me death.' The trial version incorporates a torch adapted from features of both the banner lettering and the student-built Goddess of Democracy sculpture that was destroyed by military vehicles on 4 June 1989. Like other Vocal Type releases, it situates typeface design within a specific historical and political context, making the act of using the font an engagement with that history.

Classification

The typeface is drawn from protest banner lettering photographed at the 1989 Tiananmen Square demonstrations, placing it firmly in the display category as a historically derived, expressive hand-lettered sans.
