Apta specimen from Weekend Type

A contemporary sans in three families that occupies the territory between humanist and geometric traditions, drawn from post-Johnston sign-makers' alphabets by Hugh Morse.

About

Designed by Hugh Morse and released in 2022, Apta is structured around classical Roman proportions but uses a strict mono-linear construction with vertically cut terminals and crisp engineered joins where shoulders meet stems. The three subfamilies, Mix, Geometric and Humanist, each offer six weights with corresponding italics, and OpenType stylistic alternates allow shifting between their characteristics within a single document. The recurring aperture rhythm gives the mechanical framework an underlying warmth that makes it suited to both editorial and identity work.

Classification

Apta sits between humanist and geometric sans traditions, built on classical Roman proportions with mono-linear construction and vertically cut terminals, drawing directly from post-Johnston sign-makers' alphabets.
