Designed by Hamish Makgill and Luke Charsley and released in 2021, the family draws directly from a piece of brewery correspondence found in an archive. It splits into two distinct branches: Ornate, which softens the mechanical letterforms with curved strokes and decorative detailing, and Plain, which stays closer to a conventional typewriter interpretation. Each branch runs across five weights with italics and includes OpenType features and stylistic alternates for extended creative use.
Classification
Derived from a 19th-century typewritten letter, Garton retains the mechanical character of typewriter type while extending into two distinct stylistic interpretations, placing it firmly in the display/revival category rather than a conventional mono or serif.
