Garamono specimen from WiseType

A monospaced reworking of Garamond's Renaissance letterforms, forcing humanist proportions into a fixed-width grid with swashes, ligatures and multi-width special forms.

About

Designed by Ishar Hawkins and published by WiseType in 2025, Garamono takes the old-style forms associated with Claude Garamond and constrains them entirely to a fixed-width system — an approach the foundry cheerfully describes as revisionist history. Two styles, Regular and Italic, carry extensive character sets including swashes, ligatures and final forms that span double or triple the standard cell width, giving the family decorative range within its monospaced logic. The result sits convincingly between historical type revival and contemporary novelty.

Classification

Garamono is a monospaced typeface drawn in the style of Claude Garamond's Renaissance romans, forcing proportionally varied humanist letterforms into a fixed-width grid — a structurally unusual combination that places it squarely in the mono category with serif detailing.
