Workhorse Didot
Workhorse Type Foundry · Adrian Kimball · 2021

A brutalist Didot revival by Adrian Kimball with seven optical sizes and a variable font axis, drawing on American high-contrast stencil letterforms.
About
Released in 2021, this 42-style family reinterprets Firmin Didot's 1784 design through a brutalist lens informed by American high-contrast stencils. Seven optical sizes run from 16pt through 288pt, with letterforms adjusted at smaller settings for legibility: heavier strokes, blunted terminals on characters like E, F and G. Three weights from Book to Bold each carry matching italics, with lining and oldstyle figures, stylistic sets and full variable font files included.
Classification
A high-contrast serif in the Didot tradition, with extreme stroke contrast and hairline serifs characteristic of didone classification. The foundry describes it as brutalist in approach, inspired by American high-contrast stencils.
