Workhorse Empire specimen from Workhorse Type Foundry

A 72-style revival of the 1940s Empire typeface by Adrian Kimball, extended with weights, widths, obliques and a reverse-oblique cut across a full variable font.

About

The original Empire typeface offered only a single weight and width with no lowercase, so Adrian Kimball's 2022 revival rebuilds it from the ground up with eight weights, three widths and three slant variants including a reverse oblique. The family ships as a variable font with weight, italic and width axes, plus three stylistic sets covering an alternate a, uniform k, and simplified g. With 481 glyphs and support for 220 languages, it stretches well beyond the narrow scope of its source material.

Classification

A geometric display sans with strong vertical stroke uniformity and condensed proportions rooted in the original Empire typeface, placing it firmly in the geometric sans tradition with a display-weight character.
