Workhorse Empire Fold specimen from Workhorse Type Foundry

A variable-font expansion of the 1940s Empire typeface, adding eight weights, three widths and a distinctive fold-axis that bends letterforms in and out of plane.

About

Built on the bones of the original Empire typeface from over 80 years ago, this revival corrects its single-weight limitation and ageing characters while retaining the sleek geometric spirit. The variable slant axis is the headline feature: it controls how much the letterforms appear to bend, which combined with animation yields kinetic typographic effects suited to motion and screen work. Forty styles in total span Hairline through Black across folded, reverse-folded, oblique and upright variants, with 220-plus language support and two stylistic sets for alternate A and K forms.

Classification

A geometric all-caps display face derived from the mid-20th century Empire typeface, expanded with a distinctive variable slant axis that creates a folded or bent letterform effect, placing it firmly in the display category.
