Workhorse Gothic No.1
Workhorse Type Foundry · Adrian Kimball · 2024

A variable sans-serif in 54 styles that draws on the quirky proportions and irregular contrast of 19th-century American wood type.
About
Designed by Adrian Kimball in 2024, the family spans nine weights from Hairline to Ultra across two widths, with regular, oblique and reverse oblique cuts in each. Three stylistic sets offer alternate characters including a horizontal-emphasis R, T and Y, a modernist ampersand and a classic G. The foundry cites the idiosyncratic weight placement and strange proportions that distinguished individual wood type foundries as the design's primary reference point.
Classification
A sans-serif in the American gothic wood type tradition, drawing on the irregular proportions and idiosyncratic contrast of 19th-century wood type foundries rather than any modernist or humanist lineage.
