Cedar specimen from XYZ Type

A display typeface by Jesse Ragan that fuses calligraphic structure with deliberately dissonant digital geometry to produce a hand-carved, tactile appearance.

About

Jesse Ragan's Cedar wraps rudimentary vector shapes around calligraphic letterform structures, creating a tension between tactile warmth and overtly digital construction. The dissonant arcs and corners give each letterform a sculptural, almost chiselled quality that reads as handmade from a distance yet reveals its digital origins on close inspection. Released in 2020 and still in active development at version 0.3, it is available as a variable font spanning five named weights from Thin to Ultra.

Classification

Cedar uses calligraphic structures wrapped in rudimentary vector shapes with dissonant arcs and corners, giving it a hand-carved, tactile quality that places it firmly in the display category with a distinctive sculptural character.
