Escalator
XYZ Type · Jesse Ragan

A geometric sans inspired by prefabricated 1950s signage lettering, delivered as a variable font with an optical size axis spanning text to display use.
About
Escalator originated from a commission to replicate signage for the renovation of a New York City skyscraper, drawing on prefabricated 'Block' and 'Futura' style letterforms from the 1950s. Designer Jesse Ragan increases the distinction between the two source styles, with the family delivered as a variable font offering a full weight range and an optical size axis that adjusts structure, tapering and spacing from small text to large display. Released under early access, the family is in active development with planned refinements to design, kerning and the italic character set.
Classification
Escalator draws from prefabricated geometric letterforms of the 1950s, referencing both 'Block' and 'Futura' style signage. Its geometric construction, optical size axis and variable weight range place it firmly in the geometric sans category.
