Plumbago specimen from XYZ Type

A monospaced display face with octagonal letterforms and sporadic slab serifs, originally commissioned for the Brand New Conference 2024 identity.

About

Designed by Zrinka Buljubašić, Travis Kochel and Chris Skillern for UnderConsideration's Brand New Conference 2024, Plumbago draws from Salt Lake City's street grid and the lettering once used on its streetcar network. Organic octagonal shapes sit on a strict monospaced grid, with tapered strokes and unexpected character structures giving each glyph its own dynamic movement within a disciplined rhythm. Currently at version 0.1 in a single weight across Narrow, Regular and Wide widths, the family is in active development with further styles and expanded language coverage planned.

Classification

Plumbago uses organic octagonal letterforms on a monospaced grid with sporadic slab serifs and tapered strokes, placing it firmly in display territory with a geometric-slab character.
