Bakemono
Zetafonts · Francesco Canovaro · 2021

A 42-style superfamily by Francesco Canovaro built around the tension between fixed and proportional widths, drawing on typewriter mechanics and eastern brush calligraphy.
About
The family runs across three subfamilies: Bakemono Text for proportional reading, Bakemono Mono for true monospaced setting, and Bakemono Stereo as an intermediate monowidth variant that allows weight changes without disrupting text alignment. Seven weights from Thin to Extrabold with italics throughout, two variable axes and 948 glyphs covering Latin, Greek and Cyrillic across 218 languages. Shortlisted at D&AD 2022 and awarded at PRINT and Indigo in 2023, with Arabic and CJK extensions planned.
Classification
A sans-serif with a geometric underpinning drawn from typewriter technology and eastern brush calligraphy, with monowidth proportions forming the conceptual spine across all three subfamilies.
