A2 Record Gothic

A revival of Ludlow's Record Gothic, tracing a lineage back to Morris Fuller Benton's News Gothic, expanded and systematised into a large extended family.
About
Ludlow's original Record Gothic began in the late 1920s as a single-weight copy of News Gothic, accruing bold, wide, condensed and extra-condensed styles piecemeal over subsequent decades. A2-Type have taken that historically irregular family and unified it into a coherent system spanning seven weights with italics, alongside Mono, Condensed, X Condensed, Stencil and Outline subfamilies. The result preserves the charm of the original's hybrid character while giving it the range needed for contemporary editorial and identity work.
Classification
A revival of Ludlow's Record Gothic, itself a copy of Morris Fuller Benton's News Gothic (1908), placing it firmly in the American grotesque tradition with the informal irregularities typical of that lineage.
