Edict
Schick Toikka · Florian Schick, Lauri Toikka

A high-contrast French Garalde with sharp serifs, swelling teardrop terminals and full swash italic, in Display and Text optical sizes plus a variable font.
About
Edict is an original interpretation of late Renaissance and early Baroque French type rather than a revival of any single source. Its closest prototype is Jean Jannon, whose work in turn underpinned several of the 20th-century Garamonds, and Edict shows the higher contrast and unevenly inclined axis that mark Transitional type. At its heart is the syncopation of sharp serifs and swelling teardrop terminals, with all outer corners ever so slightly rounded for a radiant warmth. The italic is animated but optimised for tight present-day fit and offers full swash capitals and lowercase terminal forms; small caps are included for advanced typesetting. Edict is available in Display and Text styles, each with five static weights (Text adds an extra Book weight), and a variable font with weight and optical size axes.
Classification
Schick Toikka describe Edict as an original interpretation of late Renaissance and early Baroque French type rather than an academic revival; the principal prototype cited is Jean Jannon, whose work was the actual basis for several of the 20th-century Garamonds. Edict shows higher contrast and a contrast axis that is not evenly inclined, characteristics of so-called Transitional type.
