Architype Catalogue Soft Outline specimen from The Foundry Types

A digitised outline version of the softly inflated letterforms Wim Crouwel hand-cut in pink paper for the Stedelijk Museum's 1970 Claes Oldenburg exhibition catalogue.

About

Originally conceived to evoke the tactile quality of Oldenburg's soft sculptures, the alphabet was cut by Crouwel from pink paper and later digitised by The Foundry following a 1996 collaboration agreement with the designer. The letterforms sit on a strict grid yet carry a rounded, padded character entirely at odds with Crouwel's usual geometric precision, making this one of the more unexpected pieces in the Architype collection. Licenced exclusively through Monotype and available via Fonts.com, FontShop, Linotype and MyFonts.

Classification

A digitised revival of Crouwel's grid-based, softly padded letterforms originally cut by hand for a 1970 Stedelijk exhibition catalogue; its rounded, inflated forms place it firmly in the display/experimental category.
