Independent Sans
A2-Type · 2013

A humanist sans designed in 2013 for The Independent newspaper, forming part of a unified type system covering serif, sans, condensed and stencil cuts.
About
Commissioned for The Independent's daily print and digital editions, Independent Sans shares its proportions and underlying structure with the broader Independent family, which includes a serif, condensed, slab and stencil. Five weights from Light to Black, each with an italic, give it sufficient range for both text and display use. The family received a D&AD Yellow Pencil in 2014 and the Typeface Design prize at the Tokyo TDC awards in 2015.
Classification
Designed for newspaper use with attention to legibility at text sizes and at display scale, sharing proportions with a broader serif and condensed family; the mix of optical warmth and functional range places it in the humanist sans tradition.
