A bespoke type system commissioned for Danish weekly broadsheet Weekendavisen, spanning hairline, display, text and sans subfamilies for print and screen.

About

Commissioned by Weekendavisen, a Danish weekly with 250,000 readers and a lineage traceable to Berlingske Tidende (1749), the system comprises four distinct subfamilies — Hairline, Display, Text and Sans — with the Sans extending into Condensed and X Condensed widths. Designed for both print and digital reading, the project won the SND World's Best Designed Newspaper award in 2021 and 2026, and the type system received the Tokyo TDC Award in 2021. A thorough editorial system built to carry the visual identity of a historic publication across all formats.

Classification

The family includes a hairline, display, and text serif alongside a sans companion, consistent with a transitional or classical newspaper serif lineage rooted in Berlingske Tidende (1749). The hairline and display cuts suggest high-contrast modulated strokes typical of transitional classification.
