A three-flavour family (proportional Grotesk, fixed-pitch Mono, hybrid Semi-Mono) in four weights with italics; a variable font ties them via a spacing axis.

About

Spot is an approachable sans serif family with a warm personality and a soft touch, available as proportional Spot Grotesk, fixed-pitch Spot Mono and hybrid Spot Semi-Mono, optionally as a single variable font. The Mono came first and shapes the whole family: a uniform stroke width, rounded ends and distinctive dots evoke a typebar striking an inked ribbon, while the wide proportions and large x-height read as restrained capitals that produce even texture in body copy. Wide letters and open spacing keep it readable in marginalia and captions, while larger sizes bring its overall roundness to the fore as a friendly display option. The variable version drives weight, slant and a spacing axis that tunes the exact degree of monospacedness, with intermediate instances producing tiny stubs on narrow glyphs that grow into wide bars in the Mono. Each of the three branches has four weights upright and italic, with Latin Extended, sub- and superscripts, innovative fractions and a kit of playful and functional icons.

Classification

Schick Toikka note that Spot's monospace came first and informs the whole family: the uniform stroke width, rounded ends and distinctive dots evoke a typebar hitting an inked ribbon. The wide proportions and large x-height also originate from this typewriter logic.
